Who is Unai Simon?

Unai Simón Mendibil (born 11 June 1997) is a Spanish goalkeeper who now represents Athletic Bilbao in La Liga and the Spanish national team.

Simón was born in the Basque town of Murgia, near Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the province of lava.

He is most likely the sole kid born from his parents’ relationship. Simon has been more interested in sports than anything else since he was a youngster.

The future goalie spent his summer holidays with his grandparents in Zamora. Simon spent his time in town following other youngsters to the fronton, where they played football together in the sweltering afternoons.

Discipline is one quality that has helped the player succeed in his profession. Thankfully, he comes from a responsible and respected family. As a result, Simon learned solid principles from his parents as he grew up.

His mother and father, while working in the state’s security agency, never took advantage of anybody in their community.

They were a peaceful family that had gained the community’s esteem by their generosity.

Despite being born in Vitoria, the athlete is a Zamora native from San Marcial del Vino. San Marcial is, in fact, the birthplace of his paternal family.

He is a Spanish national with the ethnicity of Spanish-White. Simon’s father left his birthplace when he was still a child in quest of a greener pasture in Basque Country.

He met his wife and lived down there, giving birth to the shot-stopper thousands of miles away from his birthplace.

The prospective athlete attended a school that is not mentioned in his biography while growing up with his parents. He was an excellent student who followed his teacher’s directions.

Simon had great aspirations of graduating with honors at the time. He wanted to be among the best in his class since it would offer him a greater chance of getting into a famous college.

Unai Simón is not married and does not have a girlfriend or wife. He is not in a relationship as he is focused on pushing his career to a stable peak.

The 24-year-old Spanish is 74inches tall and weighs 89kg.

The Career of Unai Simon

From CD Aurrerá de Vitoria, he joined Athletic Bilbao’s development system in 2011.  In the 2014–15 season, he made his senior debut with the farm club in the Tercera División.

Simón was promoted to the reserves on June 8, 2016, after being demoted to Segunda División B. He quickly established himself as a starter for the team, making 29 appearances throughout the season.

Simón was called up to the first team for preseason by new first team manager José ngel Ziganda on June 2, 2017, however, he continued to play exclusively for the Bs. He signed a contract extension until 2023 on July 13, 2018, and was loaned to Elche CF in the Segunda División two weeks later.

Simón was recalled by Athletic on August 15, 2018, following the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga and the injury of Iago Herrern.

He looked to be in line behind the elder lex Remiro for selection at first, but he made his professional – and La Liga – debut five days later, starting in a 2–1 home triumph against CD Leganés.

Simón made many vital saves and was awarded player of the match in only his third league game for Athletic Bilbao in a 1–1 tie with Real Madrid.

When Herrern returned to full health in October 2018, he was promoted to the starting lineup, with Simón’s sole appearances in the Copa del Rey over the next four months.

Simón was awarded the #1 squad number for the 2019–20 season and started the season as the first choice, keeping a clean sheet in an opening day triumph over FC Barcelona.

He maintained his outstanding form throughout the season, missing only two games due to sickness and playing in 33 league matches, surrendering 29 goals to finish third in the Zamora Trophy standings.

He was sent off in the first half against CD Leganés on the 37th, penultimate, matchday for a ‘last man’ challenge outside the penalty area, and the resulting suspension ended his season a game early; with ten men, Athletic Bilbao lost 2–0, effectively ending their slim hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

Simón was a member of the Spanish under-19 and under-21 teams. He was a member of the 2015 UEFA European Under-19 Championship winning side, although as Antonio Sivera’s backup goalkeeper during the competition.

Simón made his under-21 debut against Italy on September 1, 2017. He was chosen for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, and he played the opening game of the group stage for Spain, who won the tournament for the second time (Sivera was again first-choice).

Simón was called up to the senior team for the first two matches of the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League on August 20, 2020.

Despite making a blunder that resulted in a goal at the club level just a few days before, he was picked for his complete debut on November 11, 2020, and played the whole friendly against the Netherlands.

Simón was included to Luis Enrique’s 24-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020 on May 24, 2021. He started every game for the squad and scored his own goal in the 5–3 last-16 triumph against Croatia when he couldn’t manage Pedri’s long reverse throw.

Luis Enrique commended his mindset for overcoming that blunder. After a 1–1 draw in the quarter-finals, he saved two penalties as Spain won the shootout against Switzerland, earning him the Star of the Match award.

The semi-final versus Italy finished in a tie, and Simón stopped Manuel Locatelli’s first effort in the shootout, but the Italians won.

Simón was also selected for the Spanish Olympic squad for the 2020 event in Japan, which has been postponed. They reached the final with Simón as the starting goalkeeper but lost to Brazil.

He is expected to play as a key player in World Cup 2022.
