Who is Sergio Busquets?

Sergio Busquets Burgos (born July 16, 1988) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Barcelona and the Spanish national team. He is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders of all time and a deep-lying playmaker capable of guiding the game with short and controlled deliveries.

He joined Barcelona’s first team in July 2008 and has since made over 600 appearances for the club. In 2008–09 and 2014–15, he was a member of the teams that won the treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.

Busquets debuted for Spain at the senior level in April 2009 and has since made over 130 appearances for the national team. He played in two more World Cups and as many European Championships, helping his country win the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. He also appeared in two further World Cups and as many European Championships.

He is the son of Carles Busquets, a former Spanish professional goalkeeper who played in the 1990s for FC Barcelona. The Busquets, the Sanchis, and the Maldini families are the only families in which both father and son have won the Champions League (moreover with the same club).

He was born in Sabadell and joined the club’s youth ranks in the summer of 2005, arriving from Jabac. Sergio Busquets actually signed with La Masía, the FC Barcelona academy. He played with the junior A team in the same season, winning three important trophies alongside Bojan, Giovani, Jeffren, and Marc Crosas.

He joined Lleida Academy in his school life. His father’s name is Carles Busquets and his mother’s name is Loli Burgos. He has got one brother and his name is Aitor Busquets. Busquets began a relationship with Elena Galera in 2014. They have two kids, one born in 2016 and the other in 2018.

The 33-year-old Spanish is 74inches tall and weighs 76kg. He’s quite active on social media and has 4.2million followers on his Instagram.

The Career of Sergio Busquets

Busquets began his football career with CD Badia del Vallès in Sabadell, Catalonia, before moving on to CEF Barberà Andaluca, Lleida, and UFB Jàbac Terrassa before joining Barcelona’s youth divisions in 2005. In his second season, he scored seven goals in 26 games for the Juvenil A team, and two years later, he was promoted to the B team under Pep Guardiola, where he helped them gain promotion to the third level. He made his first-team debut the following season, coming on as a substitute in the Copa Catalunya.

On September 13, 2008, Busquets made his La Liga debut, playing 90 minutes in a 1–1 home tie with Racing Santander. He scored his second goal with Barcelona in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League against Basel at St. Jakob-Park on October 22, 2008, in a 5–0 group stage win.

Busquets signed a contract extension until 2013 on December 22, 2008, with an €80 million buy-out clause. In a 2–0 home win over Athletic Bilbao on March 7, 2009, he scored his first league goal.

On May 27, 2009, he was named to Barcelona’s starting eleven in the Champions League final, a 2–0 win over Manchester United in Rome; with that victory, Carles and Sergio Busquets became only the third father-and-son combination to win Europe’s top club competition while playing for the same team, joining Cesare Maldini and Paolo Maldini (won it with A.C. M) (Real Madrid).

On 27 January 2011, he signed a contract extension that would keep him at the club until 2015 – the buyout clause was increased to €150 million.

In the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals against Chelsea on April 24, 2012, Busquets scored a rare goal – only his sixth official goal in four years – from an easy tap-in following an Isaac Cuenca cross to make it 1–0 for the hosts.

On his 25th birthday, July 16, 2013, Busquets agreed to a new contract through 2018, with the buyout clause remaining unchanged. After the retirement of long-serving club captain and defender Carles Puyol, he was assigned the number 5 shirt for the upcoming season and was appointed one of the club’s four captains alongside Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and Lionel Messi on August 1, 2014.

In the absence of regular captain Iniesta and vice-captain Messi, Busquets captained Barcelona for the first time in a 1–2 away defeat to Sevilla on October 3, 2015.

His buyout clause was boosted from €200 million to €500 million in a new contract he signed through June 2023. Busquets captained Spain for the first time in a goalless friendly tie against Portugal on October 7, 2020, with Sergio Ramos on the bench. He was named to Luis Enrique’s 24-man team for UEFA Euro 2020 the following May. In Ramos’ absence, he was named captain.

On 10 October, in the final against France, he once again set up Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the game’s first goal, despite Spain’s 2–1 defeat.
