Who is Koke?

Koke is a professional footballer from Spain who plays as a midfielder for Atlético Madrid in La Liga, where he serves as team captain, as well as for the Spanish national team. He was born Jorge Resurrección Merodio on January 8, 1992.

He has played nearly 500 competitive appearances at Atlético Madrid, where he has spent his whole career. He has won the 2013–14 and 2020–21 La Liga, two Europa League championships, two UEFA Super Cup medals, and was a Champions League runner-up in 2014 and 2016.

Despite being right-footed, Koke can play as a central, left, or right midfielder due to his versatility. He is renowned for his ability to pass the ball and set up attacks.

Koke won the praise of his contemporaries, especially Barcelona’s Xavi, who saw him as his replacement:

He is a football player of the present and the future, and he possesses every quality: talent, physical prowess, etc. He has been designated as the orchestral director for Spain for the ensuing ten years. Due to the fact that we both play in the same position and because I believe he is an exceptional player, I have a special fondness for him.

With the Spanish under-21 squad, Koke won the 2013 European Championship. That year, he also made his full-team debut and competed for his nation in two World Cups and the same number of European Championships.

His mother’s name is Merodio and his father’s name is Eugenio Resurrección.  The Spaniard was born into a middle-class family and raised there.

While Koke’s mother, a housekeeper, made sure to take care of all of her family members, including her adored son, Koke, his father, Eugenio, worked in a factory in Madrid.

Koke didn’t just grow up alone in his family house. He had three siblings, a brother, and two sisters. Among his siblings, Koke has always been close to his big brother right from their childhood days.

Koke began attending school and finished his primary education at a private school in Madrid, Spain. He finished high school there the following year.

Beatriz Espejel is the name of Koke’s wife. His relationship is now excellent.

The 30 years old Spanish is 70inches tall and weighs about 70kg. He is quite active on social media and has 2.3million followers on his Instagram.

The Career of Koke

In Madrid, Koke was born. He joined the Atlético Madrid junior system when he was eight years old, and on September 19, 2009, he made his first-team debut, appearing in the second half of a 2-5 road loss to FC Barcelona after replacing Paulo Assunço. Throughout the season, he made three more appearances.

On February 26, 2011, Koke scored his first league goal for Atlético against Sevilla FC. His header from a cross from Diego Forlán made it 1-1 in the eventual 2-2 home draw. As the Colchoneros finished seventh and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, he concluded his first full season as a professional with 17 games and two goals (the other coming in a 2-2 tie at RCD Espanyol).

Koke, who was just 20 or 21 years old, started in 38 of his 48 career matches in 2012–13 and registered three goals. This included playing 112 minutes in the Copa del Rey final, which he won against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. He also started to get better at passing, whether it was in set plays or free play.

Koke’s first UEFA Champions League goal came against Barcelona on April 9, 2014, when he netted the game’s lone goal to advance Atlético to the semi-finals for the first time since 1974.

After Atlético drew 1-1 with Barcelona at Camp Nou on the final matchday to win the league title for the first time in 18 years, he finished the domestic league season as the player with the second-most assists, with 14. He was nominated for a La Liga Award for attacking midfielder but lost out to Andrés Iniesta.

Koke renewed his five-year contract with Atlético on June 25, 2014. He scored the opening goal of a 2-0 victory and was awarded player of the match in their Champions League group encounter against Malmö FF on November 4.

By the middle of November, Koke had just one goal and no assists for the whole 2015–16 season. After a run of six pivotal passes in as many games in the middle of April 2016, he had equaled his season’s assist total of 12.

Later that month, he broke that mark, moving above Luis Suárez of Barcelona on the assists list, and was chosen as Player of the Month for the second time.

In a 0-1 loss at Sevilla on October 23, 2016, Koke received his first career dismissal after receiving two yellow cards. He agreed to a new five-year contract through 2024 on May 24 of that year.

With his 361st appearance against Deportivo de La Corua on April 1, 2018, he became the top 10 appearance makers in Atlético history just two months after turning 26.

Koke became the club’s youngest player to play in his 450th game on June 23, 2020, in a 1-0 away victory over Levante UD. In the 2-1 home victory over Real Sociedad on May 12 of that year, as his team was closing in on the league title, he achieved his 500th appearance, a feat previously accomplished by Adelardo Rodriguez.

At the 2011 FIFA World Cup in Colombia, Koke played for the Spain under-20 team, which advanced to the quarterfinals. In the penalty shootout against South Korea in the round of 16, he missed, but his team still won.

At the London 2012 Summer Olympics, Koke was a member of the Spanish team and participated in all three games as the country’s tournament ended at the group stage. He also competed for the under-21s in the 2013 UEFA European Championship, where Spain won the title by defeating Italy 4-2 in the championship match in Jerusalem, earning him a spot on the tournament’s all-star squad.

In the final 12 minutes of a 2-0 friendly victory in Ecuador on August 14, 2013, Koke made his senior squad debut, taking Santi Cazorla’s place. On September 6 of that year, he made his first competitive debut for La Furia Roja, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory against Finland in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Koke was selected for both the tournament’s final roster and Spain’s 30-man preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup. He made his tournament debut on June 19 when he took Xabi Alonso’s place at halftime of the winners’ 0-2 loss to Chile at the Maracana. He was unable to alter the outcome, though, since their elimination was already assured.

He made his debut in the final game, a 3-0 triumph over Australia.
Manager Julen Lopetegui also chose Koke for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He was one of two Spanish shooters that failed in the round of 16 shootouts against the home team on July 1, resulting in a 3-4 loss in Moscow.

Koke returned to international service on November 11, 2020, in a 1-1 friendly draw away to the Netherlands, when he led the nation for the first time after two years without receiving a cap. He was chosen for the 24-man team for Euro 2020 the following May. He’s a key player for Spain in World Cup 2022.
