Gabriel began his career at Avai when he was 13 years old, but due to homesickness, he returned to So Paulo after a week. Gabriel, however, changed his mind and returned to Ava after two weeks, finally earning his first professional contract at the age of 16. In 2017, he was a member of the team that was promoted to Brasileiro Série A.

Gabriel Magalhaes signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Ligue 1 side Lille on January 31, 2017.
