Who is David de Gea?

David de Gea Quintana (born 7 November 1990) is a Spanish goalkeeper who plays for Manchester United in the Premier League and for the Spanish national team.

He was largely considered one of the top goalkeepers in the world throughout the second part of the 2010s.

His father’s name is Jose De Gea and his mother’s name is Marivi Quintana. He is married and his wife’s name is Edurne who is a Spanish singer. They have one child, a daughter named Yanay who was born in March 2021.

He has played in over -300 matches for Manchester United since joining the club in 2011 and has helped his side become one of the most proficient teams in the ‘Premier League.’

David was born and raised in Madrid, Spain, and has been playing football since the age of 13 when he joined ‘Atletico Madrid.’ In 2009, he was finally picked for the senior team, and he has never looked back.

While David enjoyed athletics, his mother encouraged him to concentrate on his studies. As a result, David excelled in all areas, but football gradually became his primary passion.

Because his father was a former player, David had access to the greatest training facilities. David began his career as an outfield player before blossoming into a promising goalie.

His youth coach described him as “active on the outfield” with “always a glimmer of talent.” For his high school squad, he was a midfielder.

Furthermore, until the age of 14, when he first identified his love for goalkeeping, he was excellent in any position, whether attacking or defending.

He was a key figure in his team’s victories in the UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Europa League in 2010. Starting in the 2013–2014 season, he has won the ‘Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year‘ title for three consecutive seasons.

As a result, he became the first football player in history to get the accolade. In 2011 and 2013, he led his national ‘Under-21’ squad to European Championship victories, and he has been a member of the national senior team since 2014.

De Gea has made over 450 appearances for Manchester United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, three Community Shields, and the UEFA Europa League.

From 2013–14 to 2015–16, he was named United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year three times in a row, making him the first player in the award’s history to win it three times in a row (four times in total), as well as being named to four consecutive (five total) PFA Team of the Year sides from 2015 to 2018.

He was nominated to the FIFA FIFPro World11 in 2018.

De Gea is expected to play in Worldcup 2022 as the main goalkeeper of the Spanish national team.

The 31-year-old Spanish is 75inches tall and weighs 82kg. He is active on Instagram having 13.2million followers.

The career of David De Gea

During his first few seasons with ‘Atletico Madrid,’ David de Gea demonstrated his goalkeeping abilities. He earned two ‘Man of the Match’ accolades in his first season, 2009–2010. However, his professional career did not start off well. In September 2009, he conceded two goals in the last minutes of his first Championship League match against Porto. His team lost the game because of this.

De Gea was called up to the senior team to cover for Roberto when first-choice goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo was away on international duty at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Roberto was injured after 27 minutes of Atlético’s UEFA Champions League Group stage match away to Porto, therefore De Gea was given his La Liga debut three days later, at home to Real Zaragoza.

In La Liga, he improved his performance. Manchester United, a Premier League team, had recently lost famous goalie Edwin van der Sar and was seeking a suitable replacement. David was one of the athletes they were keeping an eye on.

There were rumors that David might join Manchester, but he surprised everyone when he extended his contract with ‘Atletico Madrid’ in 2010.

De Gea started the 2010–11 season with a clean sheet in a 2–0 win over Inter Milan in the 2010 UEFA Super Cup, saving a Diego Milito penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson missed a League Cup match against Scunthorpe United in September to fly to Spain to witness De Gea play against Valencia.

“The key thing is that I have a contract here and I’m an Atletico player until 2013,” De Gea said of the rumors.

On July 23, 2011, De Gea made his Manchester United debut in a 3–1 friendly win over Chicago Fire. On August 7, he made his competitive United debut against Manchester City in the Community Shield. Despite being taken off guard in the first half by a Joleon Lescott header and a long-range Edin Deko goal that put City up 2–0, United came back to win 3–2.

A week later, De Gea made his Premier League debut for Manchester United against West Bromwich Albion, where he was chastised for failing to save Shane Long’s goal in a 2–1 United victory, which Ferguson regarded as “a learning process.”  On his Old Trafford debut, De Gea recorded his first clean sheet for United.

In April 2017, he was included in the ‘PFA Team of the Year.’ This was his fourth selection for the team as a goalkeeper.

De Gea began the league season(2021-2022) by conceding a goal against Leeds United.  In a 1–0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, he recorded his first clean sheet of the season.

De Gea saved his first penalty for Manchester United since a 2016 FA Cup encounter against Everton in the fifth game week of the season, denying Mark Noble of West Ham United from the spot in the last action of the game, sealing a 2–1 victory for the Reds after a late goal from Jesse Lingard.

His jersey number for club Manchester United is 1 and the Spanish national football team is also 1.
