Who is Cesar Azpilicueta?

César Azpilicueta Tanco (born August 28, 1989) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a right-back or center-back for Chelsea in the Premier League and for the Spain national team.

Cesar was introduced to football by his elder brother, Juan Pablo Azpilicueta, who is 9years old than him.

Azpilicueta was a young product of Osasuna and spent three seasons in La Liga before joining Marseille, where he won four major titles. He joined Chelsea in the summer of 2012, winning the Europa League his first season and the domestic double two years later.

He has over 450 appearances for Chelsea and is presently sixth on their all-time appearances list; Petr Cech is the club’s only non-English player with more appearances.

Chelsea won the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League in 2021, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021 under his leadership.

He married Adriana Guerendiain, his long-term lover, in June 2015. The couple has three children together, two daughters and a son. Martina, the couple’s first child, was born to Adriana in March 2014.

He did MBA in Business Management.

The 32-year-old Spanish is 70inches tall and weighs 77kg. He is active on Instagram having 3.4million followers.

The Career of Cesar Azpilicueta

He made his La Liga debut on April 8, 2007, while still registered with the reserve team, in a 0–2 away loss to Real Madrid; he started his career as a forward, then switched to the midfielder, and played in a variety of positions throughout his club and international career (senior and youth), including center-back and central midfielder.

Due to injuries in the main squad, Azpilicueta became a first-team regular at the age of 18, although as a right-back, in 2007–08. He went on to play in all but two league games the next season, retaining his spot.

On June 21, 2010, Olympique de Marseille announced that a deal had been struck with Osasuna for Azpilicueta to join them on a four-year contract for €7 million.

The Navarrese announced the agreement a week later, with the transfer price potentially rising to €9.5 million based on appearances.

In his UEFA Champions League debut, he scored the game’s only goal, but in his own net, in a group stage home encounter against Spartak Moscow.

Chelsea finalized the signing of Azpilicueta on August 24, 2012, for an unknown sum, which was rumored to be £7 million. “He is a powerful running right-back with pace, therefore I think he is already a complete player,” says colleague and countryman Juan Mata.

Club supporters gave him the mononymous moniker “Dave” since his surname was difficult for some English speakers to pronounce.

Already in his very first season, he became a regular on the first team. He was supposed to compete with Branislav Ivanovic for the right-back position.

He won this easily. He played over two hundred games in London already and is regarded as one of the most important players of ‘The Blues’.

His Club’s jersey number is 28 and Country’s jersey number is 2.

On October 29, 2013, Azpilicueta scored his first competitive goal for Chelsea in a 2–0 League Cup victory over Arsenal in the fourth round.  Following the appointment of new manager José Mourinho, he began to play as a left-back on a regular basis, replacing the long-serving Ashley Cole.

Cole was released before the start of the 2014–15 season, and the club spent £15.8 million on Filipe Luis, although Azpilicueta started the season as the starting left-back. He signed a new five-year deal with the club on September 2, 2014, and was sent off in the first half of a 2–1 win against Crystal Palace on October 18 after a foul on Mile Jedinak.

He signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Chelsea on December 13, 2016, which runs until 2020. He made his 200th competitive game for the club in a 1–0 away victory against Sunderland in his first appearance following the agreement.

He scored his first Champions League goal in a 6–0 home triumph over Qaraba FK on September 12 of that year.

Azpilicueta scored a goal and was awarded man of the match in a 1–1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on January 1, 2020, marking his 100th appearance as club captain.

When Azpilicueta played against Manchester City on January 3, 2021, he became the 13th player in Chelsea’s history to reach 400 appearances.

After John Terry (492), Frank Lampard (429), and Petr Cech (333), Azpilicueta became the fourth Chelsea player to surpass 300 Premier League appearances on August 28, 2021.

Azpilicueta was one of five Chelsea players included in the final 30-man shortlist for the 2021 Ballon d’Or on October 8, 2021.

He has scored 10goals for Chelsea and 9goals for Spain.

Azpilicueta won the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup Final on February 12, 2022, in their second FIFA Club World Cup Final (the first being in 2012, when Chelsea lost to Corinthians). With this medal and the UEFA Super Cup won just a few months previously, he became the first and only Chelsea player to win every major prize.

Azpilicueta was instrumental in Spain’s under-19 squad winning the UEFA European Championship in 2007. He was selected for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden shortly after, where he started three matches before an eventual group stage elimination.

He traveled to the European Under-21 Championship in Denmark a year later, after recuperating from a long-term injury, and won the championship.

Azpilicueta was chosen for the team for the forthcoming international friendly against Uruguay on February 1, 2013. ‘Azpilicueta is playing many games for Chelsea,’ the manager remarked of the pick. He is a high-energy player who defends effectively and is constantly ready to attack. We have high expectations for him. Five days later, he made his debut in a 3–1 triumph in Doha, Qatar, where he played the entire 90 minutes.

Azpilicueta was also included in the 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as well as the 24-man team for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying tournament. He made his senior international debut at the latter, scoring his team’s second goal in a 5–3 round of 16 triumph over Croatia.

On September 5, 2021, Azpilicueta captained Spain for the first time in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Georgia.

He is expected to play as a key player for Spain in World Cup 2022.
