Pavard began his football career with the US Jeumont youth squad. He spent three years with Jeumont before transferring to Lille in 2005. He was invited up to Lille’s B team in 2014 after a successful youth career in Lille. However, on January 31, 2015, he made his Ligue 1 debut for the club against FC Nantes.

Pavard left Lille in 2016 to join VfB Stuttgart in Germany. Pavard signed a four-year contract with VfB Stuttgart in August 2016 to play in the 2. Bundesliga, Germany’s second level. Pavard made his Bundesliga debut against Hertha BSC on August 19th, losing 2–0. On October 29, in a 3–0 win over SC Freiburg at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga with a lovely back header. On December 20, 2017, he extended his contract with Stuttgart until June 30, 2021. Pavard was put through his paces at Stuttgart, playing right back, center back, defensive midfielder, and right-wing. Finally, he was assigned to the position of center back.

He was one of only four players in the 2017–18 Bundesliga season who played every second. He played right-back, center-back, defensive midfielder, and right-wing, but after Tayfun Korkut was appointed manager in January 2018, he was exclusively a center back; the team conceded 10 goals in their last 14 games as they rose from near the relegation zone to finish seventh, just missing out on a UEFA Europa League spot.

Pavard joined Bayern Munich for the 2019–20 season on 9 January 2019, signing a five-year contract that runs until 30 June 2024. He made his competitive debut on August 3rd, as an 80th-minute substitute for Thiago Alcântara in a 2–0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the 2019 DFL Supercup. He scored his first goal for the club in a 6–1 home triumph over Mainz 05 on August 31. Pavard scored Bayern’s sole goal in a 1–0 victory over Tigres UANL in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup Final on February 11, 2021, as the club claimed its sixth trophy in a year.

Pavard was chosen by France’s head coach Didier Deschamps for the friendly matches against Wales and Germany on November 6, 2017.

[18] On the 10th of November, he made his debut against the Welsh in a 2–0 victory at the Stade de France, replacing Christophe Jallet at halftime.

He was called up to the 23-man French squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on May 17, 2018. Pavard made his World Cup debut against Australia on June 16th, winning 2–1. Pavard scored his first international goal, a half-volley from outside the penalty area, in a 4–3 World Cup round of 16 victories over Argentina on June 30. The goal was later named tournament goal of the year and nominated for the Puskas Award. He also became the first French defender to score a World Cup goal since Lilian Thuram in the 1998 semi-final against Croatia. Pavard won the World Cup after starting every game for France except the final group game against Denmark.

Pavard sustained a head injury in France’s opening 1–0 triumph over Germany at UEFA Euro 2020, although he continued to play. He felt “a little knocked out for 10 to 15 seconds” after the game, he claimed. This looked to violate UEFA’s rule, which states that a player who shows signs of concussion should be removed from the game regardless of whether he or his management agrees. UEFA determined that Pavard never lost consciousness and that it was appropriate for him to continue playing after reviewing reports from the French team’s physicians.

Due to injury, Deschamps did not call Pavard up to the national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar qualifiers.
